Three June Birthstones But One Outshines The Rest. What Makes Alexandrite Special?

Have you ever wondered how Alexandrite got its pretty name and what makes it so special? Lucky for you, we’ll uncover the origin story of one of June’s beautiful birthstones along with its magical powers, meanings and more in this journal entry.

The Origin Story Of Alexandrite And Its Meanings

19th Century Russia was where it all began. It was discovered by Nils Gustaf Nordenskiöld, a Finnish mineralist in 1834 in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River located in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Some accounts, however, suggest that alexandrite was found as early as the late 1700s.

When Nils found the alexandrite gemstone, he initially thought it was an emerald. However, he then realised that this gemstone could change its colours under different light sources. Surprisingly, the discovery of alexandrite was the same day as the future Czar of Russia’s birthday. You might have guessed it already, but this gemstone was named after Prince Alexander II of Russia, who, at the time, was not crowned prince.

The abundance of alexandrites, unfortunately, did not last long. Since alexandrite’s red and green shades matched Russia’s military colours, it became the official stone of Imperial Russia’s Tsardom, increasing demand for the gemstone, which depleted supplies found in the Ural Mountains.

Today, alexandrites are found in other parts of the world like Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, and Madagascar. Though these gemstones are not as vibrantly coloured as the original Russian gemstones.

This precious gemstone is often associated with the crown chakra, leading some to believe that the gemstone fosters a strong sense of creativity, imagination, and intuition. Though alexandrite doesn't have a long history as most gemstones do, it still possesses many magical powers. In addition to bringing good fortune, love, and luck, alexandrite is said to promote harmony between the spiritual and physical realms.

Alexandrite The Colour-Changing Stone

The majority of us have never seen an actual alexandrite gemstone in person, despite it being one of the most sought-after gemstones on the market. As a matter a fact, alexandrite is extremely rare and difficult to find in regular jewellery stores. Alexandrites from Russia are sometimes sold in estate auctions at skyrocketing prices.

But what makes them so valuable? Alexandrites are special because of their colour-changing ability. The alexandrite birthstone appears bluish-green in daylight and reddish-purple in artificial light.

Alexandrite's ability to change its colours is due to the traces of chromium found in it. The rarest colour change of alexandrites is either yellow-green or plain green.

Alexandrite As A Birthstone

The month of June is when summer is in full swingin most places. We know that June is the birth month of Gemini and Cancer signs. Like August, June has more than one birthstone, including alexandrite, moonstone, and pearl.

Those who are born in June are often described to be effortlessly attractive, sociable, and friendly. June babies tend to be imaginative, creative, and full of new ideas. They’re also said to have a hyperthymic temperament or are otherwise known to have a sunny, upbeat personality. However, while June-borns are in a jovial mood most of the time, they’re actually more susceptible to mood swings.

When the fun-loving positivity turns off, it happens without notice. But lucky for them, they can switch back just as quickly. This makes the colour-changing alexandrite the perfect birthstone for June-borns as it matches the duality of these individuals.

Alexandrite is also known as “Friday’s Child” for its connection with the day Friday. In addition to being one of June's birthstones, alexandrite is also a highly-prized anniversary gift for those celebrating 55 years of their marriage.
